Volcanic site on Fimmvörðuháls Eyjafjallajökull glacier Mýrdalsjökull glacier Þórsmörk area Básar á Goðalandi |
Fimmvörðuskáli hut is conveniently situated almost at the highest point of Fimmvörðuháls, midway between Skógar and Þórsmörk (Básar). Therefore the 25 km long hike over Fimmvörðuháls can be split in two phases by staying at the hut for one night. Guests can also stay at the hut for some nights and enjoy daytrips in the area.
Please note that the altitude of Fimmvörðuháls is more than 1.000 meters. In such an altitude weather can change quickly, even during the summer. Make sure that your clothing and equipment is adequate for any circumstances, check the weather forecast, and let somebody know where you are going; the very best is to leave a travel plan with Safetravel. The main season for hiking Fimmvörðuháls is from early June until the end of August. During the off-season there may be winter conditions on the trail, at which time it is only for highly experienced hikers.
No food is available in the hut. Also note that there is no water supply in the hut. The only water is from rain on the roof and melting snow. Therefore you must bring your own drinking water. Water bottles can be filled from open streams on the south side of Fimmvörðuháls but not the north of the hut (there are no streams).
There are no roads to the Fimmvörðuháls hut. There is public transport which you may have to book online early; to Skógar in the south or to Básar in the north.

In case of bad weather: Refunds are only issued if there is an official weather warning and authorities advise against travel in the area. Due to the hut’s remote and elevated location, challenging weather is common and not considered grounds for a refund unless such a warning is in effect.
