Fimmvorduhals
Fimmvörðuháls is an 1,100 m high mountain pass between the glaciers of Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, with a popular trail leading from Skógar to Básar. Útivist offers organized treks over Fimmvörðuháls every weekend in the summer. There are two versions of the treks:
Included in the price is the bus transport from Reykjavik to Skógar and from Básar to Reykjavik, the guiding, sleeping bag accommodation for two nights, and the transportation of your luggage to Básar. If you intend to take a shower in Básar you'll need to have coins, 500 ISK total.
Two-phase trek
Departure by bus from Mjódd in Reykjavík on Friday evening at 17:00. The bus ride to Skógar, where the trek starts, takes about 3 hours. In the evening you will hike to Fimmvörðuskáli at the highest point of Fimmvörðuháls where you stay for the night. The next day the hike goes on down to Básar, via the eruption site of the volcanic eruption in 2010. In Básar you will stay for one night at a hut. On Sunday morning it is possible to take a short walk in the area of Básar before the bus leaves for Reykjavík at 13:00. Takes about 4 to 6 hours.
One-phase trek
Departure by bus from Mjódd in Reykjavík on Saturday morning at 8:00. The bus ride to Skógar, where the trek starts, takes about 3 hours. This same day you will hike all the way to Básar, via the eruption site of the volcanic eruption in 2010. The trek lasts for around 10-12 hours. On Sunday morning it is possible to take a short walk in the area of Básar before the bus leaves for Reykjavík at 13:00. Takes about 4 to 6 hours.

Preparation list
Extra luggage (Everything you don't need during the hike) can be sent to Básar by the scheduled bus from Reykjavík Excursions (Kynnisferðir). That is included in the price but passengers shall themselves bring the luggage to Reykjavík Excursions, which is stationed at BSÍ Central Bus Terminal in Reykjavík, the same place where the tour starts from. The luggage can be delivered there between 16:00 and 22:00 every day.
Following is a list of necessary items:

- Backpack (Daypack)
- Water container
- Thermo, ½ liter
- Sun block og lip balm
- Toothbrush, soap og toilet paper
- Sunglasses
- First-aid kit (second-skin for sore feet, painkillers etc.)
- Lighter or matches
Clothing:
The weather in Iceland is unpredictable and even more so on the Fimmvörðuháls trail. Keep in mind that you are going to an altitude of more than 1000 meters. Therefore it is important that your clothing protects you from the weather you expect AND the weather you don't expect.

- Good hiking boots. The boots must give your ankle a good support, besides keeping your feet warm and dry. It is very important that your hiking boots are good, and that you are used to them.
- Walking trousers need to be good, and made of dry-fit or similar artificial fabric. Jeans and other clothing made of cotton is forbidden on treks.
- Warm underwear made of wool or artificial fabrics. It keeps moisture away from the body.
- Hiking socks made of wool or artificial fabrics.
- A warm sweater and/or shirt. (Fleece or wool is good).
- Wind-and waterproof shells (jacket and pants).
- Mittens and a warm hat.
Food
Passengers need to bring their own food for the trek. Be careful to choose food containing a lot of energy but not very heavy for the stomach. F.ex. fruits, corn and protein is good in the morning; bread and soup for lunch, and some kind of snacks rich with energy; and something more heavy for the evening, such as meat, pasta and sauce, etc. It is good to have chocolate, biscuits, raisins and etc. handy in case you get hungry or need energy during the day. Don't forget the hot chocolate, instant coffee or tea. Barbecue facilities are in Basar.
